The inclusive workplaces toolkit for including people with intellectual disabilities in the workplace: A guide for employers

Toolkit

The inclusive workplaces toolkit for including people with intellectual disabilities in the workplace: A guide for employers is a practical resource designed to help employers create more inclusive workplaces for people with intellectual disabilities. Its purpose is to address the persistent exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities from employment by providing employers with clear, actionable guidance on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, workplace support, communication, and policy development. The toolkit emphasizes that inclusion is not only a human rights issue but also a business opportunity, enabling employers to access a wider talent pool while creating workplaces that benefit all employees.

The toolkit was developed through the Inclusive Futures initiative and informed by consultations with employers, businesses, organizations, people with intellectual disabilities, and their families. The resource was created in response to employers’ requests for practical guidance and reflects the lived experiences of people with intellectual disabilities regarding workplace barriers and effective inclusion practices. It incorporates principles of accessibility, reasonable accommodation, supported employment, and inclusive workplace culture, while offering practical templates and tools that employers can adapt to their own contexts.

The toolkit is intended for employers, business leaders, human resources professionals, managers, supervisors, recruitment teams, and organizational decision-makers. It is particularly valuable for organizations that are hiring people with intellectual disabilities for the first time or seeking to strengthen existing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Organizations should use this resource when designing inclusive recruitment strategies, reviewing hiring and onboarding practices, developing accommodation and support systems, improving workplace communication, or updating organizational policies. The guide is especially useful when an employer wants to reduce barriers to employment, create a culture of inclusion, and build confidence among managers and staff about supporting employees with intellectual disabilities.

A notable feature of the toolkit is its extensive collection of practical templates, including accessible job descriptions, plain-language interview questions, employment contracts, work plans, and policy templates, enabling employers to immediately implement inclusive practices in their workplaces.
