Employment supports and best practices for hiring immigrants with disabilities

Overview

In this webinar, Tammy Bernasky and Firat K. Sayin will present ongoing research examining employment supports for immigrants with disabilities in Nova Scotia. Drawing on insights from immigrants with disabilities, service providers and employers, preliminary findings on key employment barriers and support mechanisms will be shared. This webinar will focus on recommendations that shift responsibility away from individuals (i.e., employees needing to seek accommodations) toward broader efforts to create inclusive workplaces for immigrants with disabilities in Nova Scotia.

Speakers

Tammy Bernasky is an Assistant Professor, Political Science at Cape Breton University in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She has a PhD in Critical Disability Studies from York University. Using an intersectional approach, her research is focused on understanding the impacts of oppression and developing pathways to empowerment. She specializes in addressing gender-based violence in the disability community.

Friat K. Sayin is an Assistant Professor at the Sobey School of Business Management at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His research focuses on workplace diversity, employment inequalities, and occupational health and safety issues from a multi-level perspective. He explore the complex relationships between well-being and employment outcomes of workers with multiple identities at the societal, organizational, and individual levels. His current populations of interest are immigrants, people with disabilities, personal support workers, and midwives.

Dan Samosh is an Assistant Professor in Employment Relation at Queen’s University and Academic Co-Lead of the IDEA Incubator Hub on Transitions to Work and Career Development.
