Amie F Richards is an Interdisciplinary PhD student at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. She is a Research Associate in IDEA’s Hub 1, Workplace Systems and Partnerships, working under the direction of Emile Tompa.
Richards has lived experience as a person with hidden disabilities and a parent of children with disabilities, including medical complexities. Outside of IDEA, Richard is engaged in advocacy work focused on improving the lives and healthcare outcomes of families dealing with medical complexity. Her areas of research expertise include qualitative methods, symbolic interactionism, grounded theory, grief, loss, trauma, disability, and lived experience.
Richards holds a Master of Arts (Sociology), an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a double major (Sociology and Law & Society), a Diploma of Police Studies, and a Certificate of Criminology. Since 2020, she has received the Canadian Tire Scholarship in Sociology, the Women’s Association of Memorial University of Newfoundland Single Parent Undergraduate Award, the Cpl. Michael J Roberts Memorial Award in Police Studies, the Lt. Donald O’Neill Memorial Award in Police Studies, the Cox & Palmer Award in Law & Society, and the Sean’s List Award for high academic achievement.
